Pocket tour

This project was set by a guest lecturer where by we were tasked to create AR or VR app as a group. The idea that me and my team came up with was to create a VR tour guide for the university where if you hold you phone up it will guide you to the room that you selected using gps tracking.

Role - Researcher/Designer

Tools - Figma, After Effects, Photoshop

Project/University assignment title - Exploration

The Challenge

The University of Salford is a large University with around 7 Different buildings. Finding a lecture theatre or a film studio can be hard. My team came up with an idea of an AR tour guide, where you will simply be able to follow an arrow which will direct you to your selected room.

Key findings

  • I researched the average amount of time a student or visitor would spend searching for a room before they either, asked for help from reception on a passer by.

  • I also evaluated the ease of use for the app as a visitor or student would want to use the app immediately after download.

Competitor analysis

To be able to get a better understanding of the current market, I analysed two applications that I felt  were both aiming for something similar to what I wanted to achieve. This analysis provided me and my team with much need information that we were able to use on our own application.

Utilising my research and my objective, I was able to come up with a simple site map for the features me and my team were going to focus on

User persona

Contextualising the target audience the target audience's use case for this app was very important. As this is a University project I was unfortunately unable to conduct research for this project. However simply asking class mates I was able to come up with a persona that I feel represents a potential user of this app.

Wireframes

As part of the design process I created these wireframes based on the requirements of the project.

Design language

I created a short and simple design language document for this project to help assist in creating consistency throughout the project.

Core Objectives

Accommodation

This part of the app will show you different accommodations in the surrounding area of the University

AR Navigation

The AR arrows showing the way for visitors, is the core feature of thee whole app. It will show you directions to rooms when you point your phone camera at the surroundings and direct from there.

Things to do

Salford and the greater Manchester area is full of places to explore and things to do. As this app is geared towards

Reflection

Challenges

One of my biggest challenges during this project was creating something that the developer would be able to produce in the short time frame that we had been given. Due to this, my team and I had regular meetings discussing the development and design of the app to allow for the developer to create an interactive prototype.

What can be improved?

Although I did numerus amounts of testing, due to ethical clearance from the university, I wasn't quite able to test my designs on people that I planned on using it with. However, in future personal projects that is something I would like to do, to consistently improve on my designs.
